Superman has this handy-dandy depiction of the Law of Opposites that ensues the moment that you tap your Spidey-senses, come to terms with what it is you are to contribute to the planet and have set the ambitious goals to ensure you can soar to success.
You know the deal, right?
~ the moment you decide to power-up your health regime, enter stage left the ooey, gooey, warm, triple chocolate chip cookies, you’ve been craving for eons
~ the minute you finally decide to bust out on your own and ‘live the dream’, your boss pulls you aside and tells you for the first time, like ever, that you are indispensable and offers you a $10k raise
~ your bags are packed for that retreat to heal, to rejuvenate after weeks, months, years, of caring for the world around you, and then you get the call, your friend is sick and needs you right now
~ and, that’s IT you are going to begin that project you have been putting off. This is your week. Nothing will stop you. Yahoo. And… you get the flu.
The Law of Opposites is not about Discouragement.
It IS about Empowerment.
When the world comes crashing in around your plans, its intent is to make you stand firm and say, “Oh yea, Bring IT ON!” You may have to shift a little, but you do not have to veer. This is the universe’s way of forcing you to keep your eye on the prize and do whatever it takes to make it to your goal. We know anything worth having is worth working for and is all the sweeter for having had to stand the test of distractions and discouragement.
The Universe will always give you something good,
before it gives you something GREAT!
It really is up to you to decide whether good is good enough or if you are willing to sweat it out, be clear about your “YES!” so that you can say “No” to everything else. Until you master this, you will never be able to soar to the heights that a Super Hero like you most certainly can!
Ever wonder why Superman keeps that little piece of Krypton, that Kryptonite that can weaken and even destroy him, under glass (duh?) and in his secret lair and sleeping quarters no less. Why leave it to the inevitable chance that someone, at some point, will discover it and use it against him? And indeed does. Why not just use his super strength and hurl it out into space and be done with it?
Steven Pressfield, in his gem of a kick-your-a#* book, Do the Work, addresses this, although he doesn’t refer to Kryptonite, but rather Resistance as the super villain that rears its head and grips us firm. “Resistance…may be fear of failure, may be fear of success, but you MUST suss it out, face it and make a plan to obliterate it…or you can put it in a case for later like Superman. I say, get rid of it altogether so that sneaky evil villain can’t release it at that inopportune moment.”
Pressfield rocks my world with his insights and straight-up lingo, but we differ a little here. I say, yes, suss it out, understand it, but let it serve where need be. “What we resists, persists.” (Carl Yung they think). I concur.
I say, Embrace your Kryptonite
for what it is,
a constant reminder of a choice
you could make,
a part of you that serves
to keep you in check,
human (just a little) and in constant awe
of what you do everyday to
heroically be MORE!
I think this is why Superman keeps it. He knows it may annihilate him were it to fall into the wrong hands, but to deny where he came from, who he is in part, would chip away at his spirit, and this would destroy him in ways that he could never account for really.
We must keep it real, keep in honest, keep ourselves in check, but embrace every element of life experience that has made us who we are. THIS is what has shaped us to BE the heroes we are, with the potential to soar.
Tips to Embracing YOUR Kryptonite:
1. Suss out what your Kryptonite is. What is it that has a grip on you or slows you from achieving exactly what it is you desire?
2. Put it all down on paper, and see it for what it is, only that which was and doesn’t have to be what is.
3. Embrace it for the lessons it has taught you, and see fully that you are who you are, able to do what you are doing because of this, gift.
4. Get busy, getting busy, doing what it is you are here to DO. And never, ever, settle for good, knowing GREAT is right around the corner.
I wish you a day, a life, of basking in the glow of all of who you are and a sense of freedom and peace knowing that there is nothing you need to annihilate, only love.
